In an industry that is based around innovation and development, technology can be inspiring and life changing. Technology can be used to do amazing things whose potential and results can only be realized if embraced and utilized effectively.
This can be seen at the recent Geo4Africa Summit held in Kampala - Uganda (July, 2017) where many young Tech enthusiasts showcased their innovations and startups before the organizers and attendants. What caught people's attention most was the UAV Technology use (drones) where a one Asaph Kasujja of Virtual Media company presented.
He showcased his passion for manning the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)Technology commonly known as drones and its potential in the future.
UAVs or drones are becoming very popular and most of them are relatively cheaper and user friendly. Below are some of the points that makes them unique;
- can enter environments that are dangerous to human life
- reduces the exposure risk of the operator
- can stay in the air for up to 30 hours, performing a precise, repetitive raster scan of a region, day-after-day, night-after-night in complete darkness, or, in fog, under computer control:
- performing a geological survey
- performing visual or thermal imaging of a region
- measuring cell phone, radio, or, TV coverage over any terrain
- can be programmed to complete the mission autonomously even when contact with its GCS is lost.
- can be used in video production
- can be used in construction
Besides the above use and benefits of drones/UAVs, if not manned well or follow the operator's manual and safety guidelines, there is a possibility of a computer malfunction, resulting in the loss of control in the UAV.
